If you're trying to figure out how many continuing education (CE) hours you need as a nurse practitioner, there's an annoying answer:
It depends.
There isn't one universal CE requirement for every nurse practitioner. Your requirements can come from more than one place, including your national certification and your state nursing license.
For example, an NP certified through AANPCB currently has different certification-renewal requirements than an NP certified through ANCC. Your state may also have separate continuing education requirements for maintaining your APRN license.
Here's how to sort it out.
AANPCB continuing education requirements
For NPs renewing AANPCB certification through continuing education and practice hours, AANPCB currently requires:
- 100 contact hours of advanced-practice continuing education
- At least 25 of those 100 hours must be advanced pharmacology
- 1,000 NP practice hours
- Requirements must be completed within the current 5-year certification period
That pharmacology number is worth emphasizing:
It's 100 total CE hours, not 100 + 25 pharmacology hours.
The 25 pharmacology hours are included within the 100-hour total.
AANPCB also allows qualifying preceptorship to replace up to 25 non-pharmacology CE hours, subject to its requirements and conversion rules.
AANPCB offers renewal by examination for certain certifications as an alternative to renewal through practice hours and CE. ANP and GNP certifications, whose examinations have been retired, are exceptions.
ANCC continuing education requirements
ANCC uses a different renewal model.
Under the current requirements for applications submitted before February 1, 2027, ANCC certification renewal requires:
- 75 continuing education contact hours
- For NPs and CNSs, 25 of those 75 hours must be pharmacology
- Completion of at least one additional ANCC professional-development category
- A current, active RN license
- Renewal activities completed during the current 5-year certification period
Again, the pharmacology hours are part of the total, not additional hours.
So for an ANCC-certified NP, 75 CE hours including 25 pharmacology hours does not mean you need 100 hours.
An important ANCC change is coming in 2027
ANCC has already published a new renewal handbook that takes effect for certification-renewal applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027.
If you're renewing before that date, ANCC says to continue using its current renewal handbook. If you're renewing on or after February 1, 2027, you'll need to follow the new requirements.
Because certification requirements change, always verify the requirements that apply to your specific renewal period directly with your certifying organization.
What about your state NP license?
This is where CE tracking can get confusing.
National certification and state licensure aren't the same thing.
Meeting your AANPCB or ANCC certification requirements doesn't automatically mean you've satisfied every requirement imposed by your state Board of Nursing.
Depending on where and how you practice, you may have additional requirements related to APRN licensure, prescribing, controlled substances, mandatory topics, or other continuing education.
Your state's Board of Nursing should be the source of truth for your state-specific requirements.
What CE records should you keep?
Don't wait until your certification is about to expire to figure this out.
AANPCB currently advises applicants to maintain documentation supporting their renewal information because it may be requested during an audit. AANPCB says renewal applicants should retain verification of CE and other renewal activities for two years following their renewal deadline.
ANCC similarly advises certificants to retain CE certificates and documentation supporting their professional-development activities in case they're audited.
A useful CE record should make it easy to identify things like:
- Activity name and completion date
- CE provider/accreditor
- Total contact hours
- Pharmacology hours
- Certificate or other supporting documentation
- Which certification period the activity belongs to
The easiest way to know how many CE hours you need
Instead of asking only, "How many CE hours do NPs need?" work through four questions:
1. Who certifies me? Determine whether your national certification is through AANPCB, ANCC, or another certifying organization.
2. When does my certification expire? Requirements can change, so your renewal period matters.
3. What does my state require? Check your Board of Nursing separately from your national certification.
4. How many of my completed hours are pharmacology? Don't rely on your total CE number alone. Track pharmacology separately as you earn it.
Keep your CE organized as you earn it
The hard part often isn't earning continuing education. It's remembering what you completed, when you completed it, how much was pharmacology, and where you put the certificate.
