AANP Certification Renewal Requirements for Nurse Practitioners

If your AANP certification renewal is coming up, the requirements can feel more complicated than they actually are—especially when you're trying to figure out how continuing education, pharmacology hours and practice hours fit together.
For most nurse practitioners renewing through continuing education and practice hours, the basic requirements are straightforward:
You need 100 continuing education contact hours, including at least 25 pharmacology hours, plus 1,000 NP practice hours during your current five-year certification period. You must also maintain a current, active U.S. professional nursing license.
Those requirements are established by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), now operating as NPCB.

How many CE hours do you need for AANP renewal?
Nurse practitioners renewing their AANPCB certification through continuing education and practice hours need to complete at least 100 contact hours of continuing education during their current five-year certification period.
The CE must be relevant to your nurse practitioner population focus and role and come from an accredited or approved continuing education provider.

How many pharmacology hours do you need for AANP renewal?
Of your 100 required CE contact hours, at least 25 must be pharmacology hours.
And here's an important point that can cause confusion:
The 25 pharmacology hours are part of your 100 CE hours.
You do not need 100 CE hours plus another 25 pharmacology hours, which would be 125.
Instead, think of it as 25 pharmacology hours plus 75 other qualifying CE hours, making 100 total CE hours.
Your actual mix may differ—you can have more than 25 pharmacology hours—but at least 25 of the required 100 hours must meet the pharmacology requirement.

How many practice hours do you need for AANP renewal?
You also need at least 1,000 hours of NP practice during your current five-year certification period when renewing through the practice-hours-and-CE pathway.
This requirement is separate from your continuing education hours.
So an easy way to remember the major numbers is:
- 100 CE hours
- 25+ pharmacology hours
- 1,000 NP practice hours
Do you have to upload your CE certificates when you renew?
Not routinely. AANPCB/NPCB has streamlined its renewal process: applicants attest that they have met the requirements rather than uploading certificates with the application. Documentation may be requested if your application is selected for audit, and NPCB asks you to keep it for two years after your renewal deadline.

Can you renew AANP certification by taking the exam again?
Yes, for certain certifications.
AANPCB/NPCB currently offers two renewal pathways: practice hours plus continuing education, or a certification examination.
Renewal by examination is available for AANPCB's current examinations, which include FNP, AGNP, PMHNP and ENP. The ANP and GNP examinations have been retired, so those certifications cannot use the examination pathway.
