How Many Pharmacology CE Hours Do Nurse Practitioners Need?

If you're a nurse practitioner tracking continuing education, one number you'll see frequently is 25 pharmacology contact hours.

Both AANPCB and ANCC currently require 25 pharmacology hours for NPs using continuing education to meet their applicable certification-renewal requirements. But there's an important detail:

Those 25 pharmacology hours are included within your required CE total. They aren't added on top.

For example, an AANPCB-certified NP renewing through continuing education and practice hours needs at least 100 CE contact hours, including at least 25 pharmacology hours.

ANCC's current renewal requirements similarly require NPs to complete 25 pharmacology contact hours as part of the mandatory 75 CE contact hours.

That sounds simple enough—but certification isn't necessarily the only pharmacology requirement an NP needs to track.

AANPCB pharmacology CE requirements

For AANPCB certification renewal through continuing education and practice hours, the current minimum requirements include:

  • 100 total CE contact hours
  • At least 25 pharmacology hours within those 100 hours
  • At least 1,000 NP practice hours
  • Completion of the requirements during the current 5-year certification period

AANPCB also requires a current, active U.S. professional nursing license.

So if you've completed:

  • 100 total CE hours
  • 30 of those hours are pharmacology

you have met the pharmacology-hour component of the CE requirement.

You don't need 100 general CE hours plus another 25 pharmacology hours.

ANCC pharmacology CE requirements

ANCC handles certification renewal somewhat differently.

Under its current renewal requirements, NPs must complete 75 mandatory continuing education contact hours, and at least 25 of those hours must be pharmacology. ANCC also requires completion of at least one additional professional-development category.

That means:

  • 75 total CE hours
  • 25+ pharmacology hours within those 75

—not 100 total hours. ANCC advises certificants to complete renewal activities within their current five-year certification period and retain supporting CE documentation in case of audit.

Important: ANCC has published revised renewal requirements taking effect for applications submitted on or after February 1, 2027. If your renewal falls near that transition, check ANCC's current renewal handbook before relying on older requirements.

Does any pharmacology CE count?

Not necessarily.

This is where simply keeping a running total labeled "pharmacology" can get risky.

Your certifying organization determines what qualifies toward its pharmacology requirement. A CE activity's total contact hours and pharmacology hours may also be different.

For example, a course might award several continuing education contact hours but only a portion of those hours as pharmacology credit.

The wording matters as well as the number. ANCC, for instance, specifies that content developed to meet its pharmacotherapeutic hour requirement must specifically address pharmacotherapeutics, and that the presenter must have content expertise in pharmacology.

When you complete a course, check the CE documentation rather than assuming the entire activity counts toward pharmacology.

Look specifically for language identifying the number of pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutic contact hours awarded.

Do state pharmacology requirements count too?

Potentially—but don't assume your certification requirements and state licensure requirements are identical.

National certification and state APRN licensure are separate.

Your state Board of Nursing may impose additional continuing education requirements related to topics such as prescribing or controlled substances. Requirements can vary by jurisdiction and can change.

That means an NP may simultaneously be keeping track of:

  • National certification CE
  • National certification pharmacology hours
  • State license CE
  • State-specific prescribing requirements

Some CE activities may satisfy more than one requirement, but whether they do depends on the applicable rules.

Check your state Board of Nursing directly for the requirements that apply to your license.

How should NPs track pharmacology CE?

This is one place where a single number for total CE hours isn't enough.

For every CE activity you complete, consider recording:

  1. Activity title and completion date
  2. Total CE contact hours
  3. Pharmacology hours awarded
  4. CE provider or accreditor
  5. Certificate or supporting documentation

That lets you answer two different questions at any point in your certification cycle:

How many CE hours have I completed?

and

How many of those hours are pharmacology?

You don't want to discover the difference when you're preparing a renewal application five years later.

Should you keep your pharmacology CE certificates?

Yes—keep the supporting documentation required by your certifying organization.

AANPCB recently streamlined its recertification process and says you will not be required to upload your CE certificates during the application process. However, applicants selected for audit may be asked to provide them. AANPCB also notes that CE documentation is temporarily not visible within its online account.

ANCC similarly recommends keeping CE certificates and other documentation supporting the activities entered for renewal in case of audit.

In other words, not having to upload a certificate doesn't mean you no longer need to keep it.

The bottom line

For certification renewal, 25 pharmacology hours is the key number for both AANPCB and ANCC-certified NPs under their current applicable requirements.

The difference is the overall CE requirement:

  • AANPCB: at least 25 pharmacology hours within 100 CE hours.
  • ANCC: 25 pharmacology hours within 75 mandatory CE hours under the current requirements discussed above.

And remember that your state APRN license may have separate requirements, so certification should not be your only checkpoint.

Keep pharmacology hours from getting lost in the total
